Where Nagano snow monkey tours pick you up

A snow monkey day can start in four different places, and the tour you pick decides which. Two meet inside Nagano Station at a set minute. One sets its time at the park and fetches you beforehand, while the private options come to your hotel. This guide lists every start point with its time, then turns to the trains and luggage, with the winter shuttle from Hakuba at the end.

Four ways a tour starts

Every tour on this site begins in or near Nagano, but not at the same spot. Some meet you inside Nagano Station at a fixed time, while others collect you from your hotel or from a smaller station closer to the park.

One even sets its meeting time at the park itself and sends a van to fetch you beforehand. Get this right, because the morning departures leave on time and one of them is strict about late arrivals.

Inside Nagano Station

Two tours meet inside Nagano Station, where the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo pulls in. The Zenko-ji and sake day from ~$139, our pick, meets its guide there at 9:35 am.

In winter, when the 9:35 departure fills up, an extra 9 am slot opens, so read your ticket for the time you were given rather than assuming the later one. The coach brings you back to the station by 5:30 pm, which leaves room for an evening train.

o8Experience's Obuse and sake day, from ~$158, gathers by the Beck's Coffee counter just outside the Shinkansen gates. You choose 8:45 or 9:45 am, and the van pulls out five minutes after the meeting time.

The guide waits no more than 10 minutes, after which you count as a no-show with no refund. The listing names two morning trains from Tokyo that arrive in time, the Asama 601 leaving Tokyo at 6:52 am and the Hakutaka 553 at 7:52 am. The day ends back in Nagano at about 3:30–4:40 pm.

Meet a few steps from the Shinkansen gates

The Obuse and sake day gathers in front of Beck's Coffee at 8:45 or 9:45 am and fits 6–12 people in its van, from ~$158. Step off the bullet train with time to spare, and cancel free up to 24 hours before if plans change.

Pickups at Yudanaka and Iiyama

Yadoroku's soba and Shibu Onsen tour, from ~$127, works the other way round, with its 10 am meeting time set at the park. Before that, a free pickup fetches you from Nagano Station or from the smaller stations at Yudanaka and Iiyama, at a time that varies by booking.

One reviewer advises riding the Shinkansen to Iiyama, the next stop north of Nagano, to save time on the drive. Wherever you were collected, the van brings you back there once the tour wraps up.

Yudanaka sits at the end of the Nagano Dentetsu line, a short ride below the park, which suits anyone sleeping there or in Shibu Onsen. Snow Monkey Resorts' Shiga Kogen snow day, from ~$164, has a meeting point at Yudanaka Station as well as several in Nagano City, so choose the one nearer your bed.

The Yudanaka ticket gate is also where Trip Designer's local-guide walk, from ~$111, meets at 12:20 pm. The hour suits a late riser. Against that, you get about 40 minutes in the park and no refund if you cancel.

Hotel pickup in Nagano and nearby towns

The private Omotenashi Travel car, from ~$132 per person, collects you at your hotel. The pickup area stretches past Nagano city to Nozawa Onsen and Togakushi, and the listing also names Myoko and Joetsu.

Without a hotel, you meet the car at the Zenkoji exit of Nagano Station, at the taxi stand next to the police box. The half day starts at 9 am and drops you back where you were picked up.

Japan Awaits' private day starts at 8:45 am from Nagano Station or a central Nagano hotel, and needs its booking form filled in at least 7 days ahead. The two private options are set side by side in our guide to private days.

From Hakuba in winter

From December to March, our pick adds a shuttle from Hakuba for skiers who want a break from the slopes. Pickups are at 7:40 am from Hakuba Tokyu Hotel and 7:55 am from Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal, with the return at about 6:45 pm.

That is about 11 hours door to door, so plan an easy evening. The ski-resort guide also covers Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen.

Luggage and lockers

Changing hotels on the day takes some planning. The Obuse day allows no luggage or large bags in its van, while on the private car tour your cases stay in the vehicle as you walk.

For the coach day, plan to leave anything large behind. Nagano Station has coin lockers, though the large ones can fill at busy times, so get there with a few minutes to spare.

Bring only a small bag for the trail, with food kept out of sight of the monkeys. The clothing guide covers what goes in it.

Getting there on time

Treat the meeting time as the departure time. On a busy morning the walk from the Shinkansen platform to the meeting points takes longer than you would guess.

Anyone riding up from Tokyo that morning needs a train with a buffer for delays. Save the operator's contact details from your booking on your phone too.

If none of these times work, the park is still within reach by train and bus, and the do-it-yourself guide has the route. The price comparison shows how the start point changes what the day costs.

Where do snow monkey tours meet at Nagano Station?

Snow Monkey Resorts' Zenko-ji and sake day meets its guide at the station at 9:35 am, with an extra 9 am slot in winter. o8Experience meets in front of Beck's Coffee, just outside the Shinkansen gates, at 8:45 or 9:45 am.

What happens if my train is late?

o8Experience waits no more than 10 minutes, then treats you as a no-show with no refund. Take a train that arrives with time to spare, and check the meeting time on your ticket for the other tours.

Can I start from Yudanaka instead of Nagano?

Yes. Snow Monkey Resorts' Shiga Kogen snow day has a Yudanaka Station meeting point, and Yadoroku picks up there for free. Trip Designer's local-guide walk also meets at the Yudanaka ticket gate at 12:20 pm, but it is non-refundable.

Is there a snow monkey tour from Hakuba?

Yes, in winter. From December to March our pick sends a shuttle bus from Hakuba Tokyu Hotel at 7:40 am and Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal at 7:55 am, returning at about 6:45 pm.

Can I bring my suitcase on the tour?

Not on o8Experience's Obuse day, which has no room for luggage or large bags. On Omotenashi Travel's private car it stays in the vehicle. Otherwise leave it in a coin locker at Nagano Station.
