Your own car and guide to the Nagano snow monkeys

A private tour puts a car and a guide at the disposal of your group, from your hotel door to the trailhead and back. Two of the tours we cover work this way, and both price per person on a rate that changes with group size. A couple of small-group tours often feel nearly private as well. This guide sets out what each includes, then does the sums for two and four travelers.

What private means here

Two options on this site are fully private, so nobody outside your group shares the guide or the vehicle. Omotenashi Travel's private tour by car, priced from ~$132 per person, is one of the five tours on our home page.

Japan Awaits' private day is an extra that we cover only in these guides. Both quote a per-person price that depends on the size of your group, so the figure you see first is the lowest you could pay.

A pair of small-group tours run so small on some days that they feel private, though you cannot book them that way. They come further down, because for a couple they can be the better buy.

Omotenashi Travel's car and guide

Omotenashi Travel sends an English-speaking guide and a separate driver to your hotel, whether that is in Nagano city or out in a town such as Nozawa Onsen or Myoko. Tolls and fuel are in the price.

Guests without a hotel are met by the police box at the taxi stand outside Nagano Station's Zenkoji exit. The half day runs 4–5 hours from 9 am, and the full day stretches to about 9.5 hours.

At the park, the walk from the parking takes about 30–40 minutes each way, and you set the pace at the pool. The guide photographs your group as a gift, which saves handing your phone to a stranger. The ¥800 adult entry (¥400 for children) is paid on site.

Lunch is not included, but the guide suggests a place. Ratings are strong on both sites, 4.8 from 58 reviews on GetYourGuide and 5.0 from 8 for the half day on Viator. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, and it cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.

The second stop on a full day

On the full day you add one stop after the monkeys, picked from a list of four. Togakushi Shrine is known for its soba, and Shibu Onsen is the old hot-spring town below the park. The other two are Obuse and Zenko-ji.

The season shapes the menu too. In April the listing offers cherry blossom at Garyu Park, and from May to October a forest walk at Shiga Kogen.

The month changes what you see at the pool as well. June is the birth season named on the listing, so babies may be around. Bathing is never certain, and most of it happens in the cold months from about December to March.

On a few days each year the troop stays away entirely. Each add-on gets a fuller write-up in our guide to second stops, and the month-by-month guide covers bathing season.

A car and a guide for your party

Omotenashi Travel collects you at your hotel and builds the day around your group, from ~$132 per person, with the rate falling as the group grows. Entry and lunch are paid on the day, and both sites refund in full until 24 hours before.

Japan Awaits' private day

The Japan Awaits private day, from ~$333 per person, is the fuller day of the two. It runs about 8 hours from 8:45 am, with pickup at Nagano Station or a central Nagano hotel.

The park gets two hours and Obuse another two, with an hour each at Zenko-ji and the Hokusai Museum. It holds 5.0 from 76 reviews on Viator, where reviewers single out guides such as Hori.

Entry fees and lunch are extra, and the booking terms are strict. The listing is non-refundable and wants a form filled in at least 7 days before, with booking 1–3 months ahead suggested. Book it only once your dates are fixed, ideally with travel insurance that covers the loss if they move.

Small groups that feel private

Yadoroku's soba and Shibu Onsen tour, from ~$127, caps its van at seven travelers and picks you up free at the station. Guides such as Umut come up again and again in reviews.

A soba lunch is included, followed by a public bath in Shibu Onsen. You share the van, but with so few people the guide has time for everyone.

o8Experience's Obuse and sake day, from ~$158, takes 6–12 people and usually 6–8. Some reviewers found they were the only two booked that day.

That comes down to luck on the day, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to book. It also meets inside Nagano Station instead of at your hotel, and the meeting-point guide has the details.

The per-person maths for two and four

For a couple, nothing here beats the coach on price. Our pick at ~$139 already includes lunch and entry, so two seats run to roughly $280 with only the train to add.

Book the private car instead and the same couple pays its rate for two, set higher than the ~$132 floor, then ¥1,600 at the gate and two lunches. The extra money buys your own pace and a guide who answers only your questions.

With four travelers the picture changes, because the private car's rate per head drops while four coach seats at the adult price come to about $556. Add ¥3,200 at the gate for four adults (¥2,400 for two adults with two children over 5) plus four lunches, then compare that total with the coach on your date.

Enter your group size on the listing and it shows the real price before you pay, which beats guessing. Every tour's price sits next to the others in the cost breakdown.

Who a private tour suits

  • Families with small children. Door-to-door pickup and your own pace on the trail make a long day easier; the family guide has the age rules
  • Skiers in Nozawa Onsen or Myoko. The private car picks up there, so there is no train to Nagano first; see our page for skiers
  • Photographers. You decide how long to stay at the pool, within the park's opening hours
  • Groups of four or more. The shared car brings the per-person rate down

Solo travelers and couples who don't mind company usually do better on the coach day or in Yadoroku's van. The money saved pays for a night in Shibu Onsen.

Your own guide

Booking a guide of your own

How much does a private snow monkey tour from Nagano cost?

Omotenashi Travel's private car and guide starts at ~$132 per person, and the rate falls as the group grows. Japan Awaits' private day starts at ~$333 per person. Park entry and lunch are extra on both.

Does the private tour pick me up at my hotel?

Omotenashi Travel picks up at hotels in Nagano city and in nearby towns such as Nozawa Onsen and Myoko. Without a hotel, you meet at the taxi stand by the police box at Nagano Station's Zenkoji exit. Japan Awaits collects from Nagano Station or central Nagano hotels.

Can I cancel a private snow monkey tour?

Omotenashi Travel refunds in full up to 24 hours before. Japan Awaits is non-refundable and asks for a booking form at least 7 days ahead.

Is a private tour cheaper than the coach for a couple?

No. A couple pays the two-person rate, which sits above the ~$132 starting figure, plus ¥1,600 at the gate and lunch, while the coach day at ~$139 includes entry and lunch. The extra pays for your own timing and guide.

Will we see the monkeys bathing on a private tour?

No operator promises it. The troop comes down most days, but the monkeys bathe mainly in cold weather, roughly December to March. On a few days each year they stay away altogether.
