Nagano snow monkey tours, priced line by line

Most of the money on a snow monkey day goes on what happens around the pool. The five tours we compare cost ~$127–164 per person, and the gap pays for lunch plus whatever second stop comes with it. Two more options in these guides stretch the range at both ends, down to a short guided walk and up to a private day. Each price below is matched to what it covers before we add the costs the listings leave out.

Seven tours in one table

The table holds the five tours on our home page plus the two extras that appear only in these guides. Each is shown at its regular "from" price per adult on the cheaper booking site.

Time at the park includes the walk in and out wherever the listing counts it that way. Prices shift a little from date to date, so treat them as a starting point rather than a quote.

What each of the five prices buys

Yadoroku's soba and Shibu Onsen tour, from ~$127, is the cheapest of the five and the smallest, seven travelers at most. Pickup at the station is free. The price covers entry plus apple pie at the Enza cafe, then a soba lunch with one public bath in Shibu Onsen.

There is no temple and no sake. The listing also warns that few monkeys may come down to the pool from September to November, so autumn is a gamble on this one.

Snow Monkey Resorts' Zenko-ji and sake day, our pick at ~$139, fills about 8 hours. That buys the coach from Nagano Station and a live English-speaking guide, who spends 1.5 hours with you at Zenko-ji.

Lunch and entry come with it, plus a sake tasting for anyone 20 or older. The weak point is the group, a standard one that can reach 99 people.

o8Experience's Obuse and sake day, from ~$158, prices by group size. Your van seat (6–12 travelers) comes with entry and lunch in Obuse, plus two 30 ml pours at the Masuichi-Ichimura brewery. The Hokusai Museum costs extra, and latecomers get 10 minutes before the van leaves.

Snow Monkey Resorts' Shiga Kogen snow day, from ~$164, is the dearest shared tour and runs in winter only. Its 9 hours pay for 1.5 hours of snow play and a lunch beside the ski fields, with park entry thrown in.

Snow clothing costs extra. If the road up to Shiga Kogen is closed, the day switches to Zenko-ji with no advance notice.

Omotenashi Travel's private car and guide, from ~$132 per person, works differently, because the per-person figure falls as your group grows. Your party gets a car with a driver plus an English-speaking guide.

Tolls and fuel are covered along with hotel pickup. The ¥800 entry and lunch are not, so budget for both on the day.

The same tour on two sites

All five main tours sell on both sites, and the gap is usually a few dollars. GetYourGuide comes out cheaper on four of them.

  • Soba and Shibu Onsen. About $127 regular on GetYourGuide, often shown reduced to about $102, against about $130 on Viator
  • Zenko-ji and sake day. About $139 on GetYourGuide and about $142 on Viator
  • Obuse and sake day. About $158 on GetYourGuide and about $162 on Viator
  • Shiga Kogen snow day. About $164 on GetYourGuide and about $168 on Viator
  • Private car and guide. From about $136 on GetYourGuide, and about $132 on Viator for the half day

Reduced prices come and go, so open both listings for your date before you pay. The tour itself is identical on either site, which makes the cheaper one on the day the one to book.

One ticket that covers the day

The Zenko-ji and sake day leaves Nagano Station in the morning and has you back by 5:30 pm. Lunch and the park gate are already paid, the sake tasting too, from ~$139. Both sites refund in full up to 24 hours before.

What you pay on top

  • The Shinkansen to Nagano. No tour includes it; from Tokyo it costs several thousand yen each way
  • Park entry. ¥800 for adults, ¥400 for children, free under 6, paid on site on both private options
  • Lunch. Not included on either private option
  • Snow clothing at Shiga Kogen. ¥500 per item on the snow day, small sizes too
  • The Hokusai Museum. Optional on the Obuse day, entry paid by you
  • Zenko-ji's inner sanctuary. Optional on our pick

Tipping is not customary in Japan, so it gets no line here. A thank-you as you say goodbye does the job.

A couple and a family of four, added up

A couple on our pick pays roughly $280 for two seats at ~$139. Lunch and entry are inside that, which leaves the train as the only extra. On the soba and Shibu Onsen tour the pair pays about $254 at the regular price, or about $204 when GetYourGuide shows its reduced rate.

In the private car they pay the rate for two, pitched above the ~$132 starting figure. Add ¥1,600 at the gate and two lunches, and the half day ends up dearer than the coach (our private-tour guide runs the sums).

A family of two adults and two children aged 8 and 11 pays about $556 for four coach seats at the adult price; check the listing for child rates. The private car charges its four-person rate plus ¥2,400 at the gate and four lunches, and four people sharing one car is where the per-person rate drops.

A child under 6 rides free on the Shiga Kogen snow day, though without a meal. The age limits for every tour sit in our guide for families.

The two extras and their catch

Japan Awaits' private Nagano day, from ~$333 per person, is the priciest option here, with the rate set by group size. Its 8 hours from 8:45 am cover the park and Zenko-ji plus Obuse with its Hokusai Museum.

Entry fees and lunch come on top of that. The bigger catch is the refund policy, because there isn't one, so a change of plan costs the full amount.

Trip Designer's local-guide walk from Yudanaka, from ~$111, sits at the other end. It meets at Yudanaka Station at 12:20 pm for about 40 minutes in the park, and it is non-refundable too.

Cancelling, and how far ahead to book

The five main tours cancel free until 24 hours before the start. That lets you book early and drop out if the forecast turns ugly.

Book the two extras only once your dates are fixed. Small groups fill first, and Viator puts the average booking for the soba and Shibu Onsen tour at about 67 days ahead.

Before you book, check where each tour starts. Skipping a tour altogether costs far less than any price above, and the train-and-bus route shows how. Second stops after the park get their own comparison.

Before you pay

Paying for the day

What is the cheapest snow monkey tour from Nagano?

Yadoroku's soba and Shibu Onsen tour is the cheapest of the five main tours at ~$127, and GetYourGuide often shows it reduced to about $102. Entry and lunch are included along with a public bath. Trip Designer's walk from Yudanaka costs less at ~$111, but it gives about 40 minutes in the park and is non-refundable.

Is park entry included in the tour price?

On the first four main tours, yes. On Omotenashi Travel's private car and on Japan Awaits' private day you pay on site. Adults pay ¥800 and children ¥400, and under-6s go in free.

Is the Shinkansen to Nagano included?

No tour includes it. Plan on several thousand yen each way from Tokyo, and book a train that reaches Nagano well before your meeting time.

Do I need to tip the guide?

No. Tipping is not customary in Japan, and a warm thank-you is enough.

Do I get my money back if I cancel?

On the five main tours, yes, up to 24 hours before the start. Japan Awaits' private day and Trip Designer's walk from Yudanaka are non-refundable.
